Organic cotton is one of the most comfortable and responsible fibres that exists. But like any natural material, it needs specific care to last years without losing shape, colour or feel. Here are the key tips.
Why Organic Cotton Deserves Special Care
Unlike conventional cotton — treated with pesticides, bleaches and chemical finishes — organic cotton is produced without agrochemicals and with more respectful dyes. This makes the fibre purer, softer and more sensitive to high temperatures and harsh detergents.
Wash Temperature: The Golden Rule
Always wash cold or at 30°C maximum. Heat shrinks cotton fibres and deteriorates them over time. A 60°C wash can reduce a sweatshirt a full size after just a few washes. Cold water cleans just as well for everyday dirt and extends the life of the garment considerably.
Detergent: Less Is More
Use mild liquid detergent, preferably eco-friendly. Powder detergents can leave residues in the fibre that harden it over time. Avoid fabric softener: organic cotton is already soft on its own, and softener blocks the fibres, reducing their breathability.
Spin and Drying
Spin at low speed — 800 rpm maximum. For drying, always lay flat or dry horizontally, never hanging from the shoulders: the weight of the wet water deforms the garment if it hangs vertically. Avoid the tumble dryer — heat is organic cotton's worst enemy.
Ironing and Storage
If you need to iron, do so with the garment inside out and at medium-low temperature. For storage, fold garments rather than hanging them. Store in a dry place, away from direct light.
Stains: Act Fast
Apply cold water and a little neutral soap directly, rub gently and rinse. For difficult stains (oil, wine), damp bicarbonate works well as a pre-treatment.
