What Is Slow Fashion?
Slow fashion is a way of producing and consuming clothing that prioritises quality over quantity, durability over novelty and real impact over immediate price. It's the antithesis of fast fashion — that model that has spent decades convincing us that clothing is disposable.
It's not a trend or a niche movement. It's a necessary correction to a system that has normalised something irrational: buying a t-shirt for €5, wearing it three times and throwing it away.
The Real Problem with Fast Fashion
- The textile industry is responsible for 10% of global CO₂ emissions
- 92 million tonnes of textile waste are produced per year
- 85% of textiles end up in landfills or incinerators
- Each synthetic clothing wash releases up to 700,000 plastic microfibres into the sea
What Does Buying Better Mean?
- What is it made of? — Prefer natural fibres (organic cotton, linen, wool) or certified recycled materials.
- Where is it made? — Local or European production has much greater traceability.
- How long will it last? — A garment that lasts 5 years has a much lower cost per use than one that lasts 5 months.
- Does it have certifications? — GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Wear are verifiable guarantees.
The Greenwashing Trap
Not everything sold as sustainable is. Fast fashion giants have discovered that selling “conscious collections” is good business — even if they represent 1% of their total production. Real slow fashion brands don't have an “eco line”. All their production is.
How to Start
- Next time you need something, wait a week before buying it
- If you still want it, look for brands you can verify
- Take care of the pieces you already have — washing them less and in cold water extends their life enormously
- When you no longer want them, sell them, donate them or swap them
